Glossary of print processes

Litho
Regular flat print using standard or metallic pantone colours.

Thermo
Initially printed in the same way as litho. Whilst ink is wet, a heat sensitive powder is sprinkled on the print area. This is then subjected to a heat process which makes the ink/powder bubble. When dry it creates a raised, gloss or matt uneven bubbly finish. Ultimately gives a stylish alternative to flat litho. Can be used in laser printers and digital presses. Clear thermo is also available.

Embossing/De-bossing (printed & blind)
A die plate is made initially and the print area is punched from behind. Used to lift an image or logo above the paper. Can be printed or certain areas can be blind. Used mainly to give a classic look. De-bossing gives the same effect but image punched in from the front, again blind or coloured.

Die Stamping
Initially a copper plate is made with the required text or logo. This is then lightly hit from behind so that the text or logo becomes raised. Unlike all other raised processes, it only raises slightly. The finished product leaves a dulled-down effect, giving an overall prestige look. Probably the most stylish, modern way of presenting a letterhead, business card or invite.

Foiling (gold, silver, metallic colours)
Foil replaces the usual ink on the print area, logo or image. Again, like with embossing, a plate is made and the foil is cut to suit. Used to accentuate logos or certain areas of print. Used mainly on crests, warrants, and invites.

4 Colour Process
Using litho inks Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Universally used for brochures, catalogues, postcards etc.
